User research, what are people doing?

Post icon: RHB's 1700 dancers in Wellington, Feb 2007.

I had planned to do some street interviews and ask random people what sites they’ve been using recently, and what they like or dislike about them. This is for the upcoming Egovt Bar Camp (external link) (Sept 15th).

I might not get to do the interviews (not really feeling out there enough to do it) but am still keen to talk about user research and what people are doing in this area, at all stages of things web - planning sites, initial audience research, and user research done as part of an IA or user interaction design process.

Earlier today I had a good read of, and reviewed the report Going Beyond Compliance (external link) , which discusses findings of a user testing study of government websites by Accease.com (external link) . Reading their report, it occurred to me that perhaps much of our government web presence is still too focussed on, and about expressing the structure and identity of the organisations themselves. Rather than it all being about the things people need to do and giving them websites where they can do those things.
